Golden Milk, the yellow-hued creamy spiced beverage that is having a moment in the sun, has ancient origins in India and Ayurvedic medicine. The health benefits of its main ingredient, turmeric, range from anti-inflammatory to antioxidant.
But more importantly to us here at Oaktown, Golden Milk is delicious. The earthy, faintly spicy flavor of turmeric gains some balance when combined with sweet cinnamon and cardamom and spicy ginger and black pepper.
Making a batch of Golden Milk paste to store in the fridge makes it that much easier to quickly whip up a cup of Golden Milk whenever you want. Suspending the spices in coconut oil makes the brew smoother and leaves less sludge than simply stirring the spice blend into milk. (Although, make no mistake, there is still some sludge!)
Makes about 1/2 cup paste, enough for 10-20 servings of Golden Milk.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons Golden Milk blend
1/3 cup water
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 teaspoons honey or sweetener, to taste
Directions:
Combine spices and water in a saucepan and whisk to combine. Add coconut oil and bring to a simmer, then simmer for 3-4 minutes, whisking constantly. Let cool, then whisk in honey or sweetener of choice.
Store the paste in a clean jar. It will keep in the fridge for about 3 months.
For Golden Milk, gently heat a cup of milk of choice. Whisk in 1-2 teaspoons of paste.

I’ve been making this paste since I took the class at Oaktown Spice shop.
The instructions are FLAWED. Doing it this way makes it gritty.
Heat the oil gently. Then add the spices and let them bloom. Then add hot water. We were taught to whisk for 10 minutes which I’ve been doing, but the quantities are much larger. I let sit for 5 minutes as we were instructed and mix with Manuka or my local honey. By mixing rather vigorously, it makes an emulsion and helps preserve the paste. I store in a sealed glass jar in the fridge.
My morning drink is 1/3 coconut almond milk, 2/3 water and 1-2 tsp of the paste. It’s enough milk to be creamy without all the calories. I believe that the first thing we put into our system in the morning should be healthy and I love this drink.
