Dig into a hearty chili with a kick of heat! This classic chili recipe comes with an unconventional twist -- the addition of baking soda for tender, moist ground beef. Oaktown Spice Shop Chili Powder has a base of earthy ancho chiles, paired with garlic, cumin, and a dash of Mexican oregano, making it the perfect starting point for your next comforting meal!
1 lb extra lean ground beef
2 squares dark chocolate
Shredded cheddar cheese
Combine the ground beef, baking soda, and salt in a bowl, mixing to evenly distribute. Let rest for 20 minutes.
In a large, heavy bottomed pot, add the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions have softened, about 5 to 6 minutes.
Add the beef broth, canned tomatoes, black beans and date syrup. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and let simmer, covered for 30 minutes.
Remove the lid, and let simmer for an additional 20 minutes, or until it reaches your desired consistency. Add the chocolate and lime juice, mixing until the chocolate is fully melted. To thicken, continue cooking, without the lid, until thickened. If you prefer a thinner chili, add additional beef broth.
Serve with preferred toppings. Enjoy!

Hi Sharon,
Thank you for your question! I reached out to the recipe developer who let me know it should be 2oz of chocolate.
Warmly,
