The pork is seasoned with five spice powder and umami sea salt, then gently braised until melt-in-your-mouth tender. This dish is both meaningful and delicious, bringing both flavor and luck to your celebration.
2 lbs pork belly
2 tablespoons neutral oil
1 tablespoon Oaktown Spice Shop Chinese Five Spice
1 teaspoon Oaktown Spice Shop Umami Sea Salt
½ cup Shaoxing wine
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon Oaktown Spice Shop minced onion
1 teaspoon Oaktown Spice Shop Szechuan peppercorn
2 tablespoons sugar
2-3 cups water, or enough to barely cover pork belly
Scallions
Cilantro
Oaktown Spice Shop toasted sesame seeds
Cut pork belly into 1 inch thick pieces.
Soak in cold water for 30 minutes to remove impurities.
Remove pork belly and pat dry.
Place into a bowl and add oil, Chinese Five Spice, and Umami Sea Salt.
Cover and let marinate for 1 hour.
In the meantime, mix together ingredients for braising liquid.
In a large pot over medium heat, add pork belly and cook for 4-5 minutes until slightly brown.
Add braising liquid into pot and mix well.
Bring to a boil then lower heat to maintain a simmer.
Cover and simmer over low heat for around 1 hour, or until pork is tender.
Stir occasionally and add a bit of water if needed.
To reduce the sauce, uncover the pot and let liquid evaporate and thicken for about 8-10 minutes.
Serve hot with rice. Garnish with scallions, cilantro and toasted sesame seeds.
